My First Feelings Flip Book

$9.00

Every parent, teacher, babysitter, counselor, or other person who otherwise engages with young children in their daily lives KNOWS that little people can have very big feelings, just like adults! Unlike us grown-ups, however, they may not yet have the language to tell us what it is they are feeling. This feelings flip book is designed to help children ages 3-7 to develop two foundational social-emotional skills: identifying what emotion they are feeling and communicating to others what they are feeling. The colorful Funny Food characters help to bring these feelings to life, so that your kiddos can simply point at what they are feeling, even before they have learned to read.

Description:

This flip book contains nine cardstock flashcards (including the cover card) on a flexible plastic ring. The cards measure 2x3", and they have been hole-punched in the corner so that they can be stored on their 2.25" diameter plastic ring. The plastic ring is soft and flexible, and it can be opened and closed so that you may take the flashcards off of the ring. (Plastic rings come in multiple colors, but I cannot guarantee which color ring you will receive with your flip book). In addition, the cards have been given rounded corners so that there are no sharp edges for little hands.

The cards contain images that have been printed with a glossy, UV-proof coating to protect the colored illustrations. This glossy coating also allows you to use dry-erase markers on the front of the cards. (Note: The back of the cards are not coated, and therefore you should not use dry erase markers on the backside of the flashcards). These cards are made of sturdy 14 pt. cardstock.

There is a line on the front cover of the flip book where your child can write their name. I recommend using Sharpie or other permanent marker here to ensure that the ink does not smear or wipe-off.

Suggestions for using "My First Feelings Flip Book":

1. Begin practicing using the flip book with your child when they are in a calm, emotionally-regulated state. When your child is relaxed, they are ready to learn. Do not introduce the flip book to your child for the first time while they are experiencing big, overwhelming emotions. Your child is not ready to learn and apply these skills while they are in the middle of a tantrum.

2. Use the flip book as a reflection tool. Even if you have already taught your child to use the flip book while they are feeling calm and centered, it is unlikely that they will be able to apply these skills while they are experiencing big emotions that have caused them to become emotionally and physically dysregulated. Wait until your child has worked through the big feelings, and then use the flip book to talk about what they were feeling when their emotions got too big.

3. Pair "My First Feelings Flip Book" with "My First Funny Food Feelings Chart". This feelings chart will help your child to develop three foundational social-emotional skills at home: identifying what they are feeling, communicating what they are feeling to others, and scaling the intensity of their feelings. Use the feelings chart as a learning tool in the home, and then reinforce these skills with your portable flip book on all of your adventures outside of the home.

4. Keep the flip book in a location where your child can easily find and access it. This way, your child can begin to independently utilize this tool, practice these skills, and apply them in their daily life.

5. Teach and reinforce the use of the flip book by modeling how to use it. Children learn by example, and they are also more motivated to do a behavior if they see adults who they love and trust doing these same behaviors.
